“Betwixt and between, here I hang, with above below me, and below above. I fall upwards into the starry void, a gateway beckons, yet I’m caught on the great tree’s branch.

I am the shore-spanning shaman, I am Odin’s quest. I am the moment before birth, I am cosmic wisdom brought into being. I am the child of The Empress, held by The World. Between them, I see both beginning and end through the eyes of Thought and Memory. What is ancient may be fresh and new and what is newborn may be the wisdom of The Hanged Man.

The Vortex swirls beneath, I feel its pull.

I am The Fool’s sacrifice, that he may know his name. I give wholly to the void, to be holy in The World. My path is clear, take it if you would be reborn…”

~From the “Tarot of the Sidhe” by Emily Carding~

The Hanged Man is a Tarot card I keep encountering every now and then. It almost feels like he is here to bring me back on the path when I’m going astray or losing sight of the bigger picture and/or my goals.

He is an interesting character, I view him as some kind of chrysalis state between The Fool (0) and The Magician (I). The Hanged Man walks between the worlds, hanging upside down as Odin did, in order to find answers about who he is (in the Tarot of the Sidhe, it is said “I am the Fool’s sacrifice, so he may know his name”), and what he wants to achieve. Time is irrelevant to him, he’ll just hang there as long as necessary to gather the Knowledge and Wisdom that he needs to achieve self-mastery and become The Magician (the one who masters the elements, creates his own life & has control over it).

The Hanged Man is card number XII: a combination of The Wheel of Fortune (X) and The High Priestess (II). The Wheel of Fortune is ruled by the Norns (the Fates) who dwell under the Yggdrasil (the Cosmic Tree). It’s always good to have them on your side, and one of the reasons The Hanged Man got there in the first place is because The Fool “will always have our (the Fates) favor” (Tarot of the Sidhe)…And hanging from the Cosmic Tree will only bring him closer to Himself and the Knowledge of His Destiny. Now The High Priestess (II) is connected to the Divine and is inherently knowledgeable about the Secrets of the Universe. But unlike The Magician, she will either keep them to herself or share them with a worthy apprentice (like The Hanged Man). She’s not really concerned about the state of the world or making a difference in the material world/physical plane…Her Realm is the Ether. Her Knowledge is Timeless and Immortal, she’s beyond Time and Space.

Therefore our Hanged Man is divinely inspired to make conscious choices about his (spiritually led) Destiny and as such has the favor of the Fates…That is a powerful combination that can only lead him to success on the etheric & physical plans.

The last lesson from The Hanged Man (but by no means, the least important one) is patience. He needs to wait and accepts it. Time is irrelevant in the bigger picture of his life. He knows that as long as he doesn’t lose focus, he will reach his goal(s). So why hurry? The Hanged Man surrenders fully and wholeheartedly to the Universe, his Divine Plan (the purpose of his life, of which he is now fully aware) & the Divine Timing. He is now beginning to masters the Keys of Manifestation which will make him graduate into The Magician…The time is coming but is not quite right yet. In order to become who is he meant to be, The Hanged Man had to make choices and (like Odin) sacrifices in order to get where he is now. These sacrifices were necessary to move forward, as he’s no Fool anymore and, with the gifts of Knowledge & Wisdom as well as the blessings of the Norns, he has completed his Great Task. The end of his journey is near, he knows it. A cycle ends, a new one is about the begin, it is already there in the Ether, supported by the Universe.

The chrysalis has served its purpose, now The Blessed Magician is ready to come out and spread his wings into The World (XXI)…“The great tree has given its runic secrets and from them The Fool has made his name” (Tarot of the Sidhe)

Dear Reader,

I don’t need to personally know you to sense that weird look on your face. That “what the heck is she talking about?” kind of look. Before labeling me as a Mad Hatter, let me explain the how & the why.

Firstly, I’ve always been drawn to the unusual & the metaphysical, even as a young child. I always sensed that there was or had to be more than what meets the eye, and that life couldn’t possibly just be about being born, graduating from school, getting a job, getting married and then having a house, kids, dogs & white picket fences. That kind of life never made me dream anyway.

Fast forward to my early twenties, year 2000. I’m studying fashion & textile design in Paris. I’m already spiritually awakened (even if just a newbie in that field), New Age & cocooning are trendy, everybody is fearing the end of the world which illuminated fashion designer Paco Rabanne foretold would occur during a total solar eclipse…That part, of course, didn’t happen (I survived!).

Anyway, during that last school year, we all have to design a conceptual mini-collection in order to graduate. Having 2 parents of 2 very different origins & backgrounds, one might even say opposite, I quickly came up with the notion of the double, the other, the Doppelganger. I learned everything I could at the time on that topic in order to apply it as concept in my collection. Needless to say that my school wasn’t quite Hogwarts and therefore my teachers weren’t much into the metaphysical. But to add insult to injury, they all put their grain of salt and slowly but surely my once great idea got diluted to the point that I lost the thread. Even though I got my degree, my collection was a failure, thanks to these people who I shouldn’t have listen to in the first place, even though they were my teachers.

I promised myself that one day, somehow, I would pick up the ashes of my Doppelganger collection and rework it to make it what it should have been. I feel that the time has come, that I have learned & especially experienced more on the topic. The concept has evolved a little but the end result will be more matured and I don’t want to limit myself just to textiles & clothing.

As for my Double/Doppelganger, I know she’s watching and looking forward to working with me on this long overdue project of mine. She’s neither the evil twin of German literature, nor an ominous Banshee. She’s free of physical body and therefore not bound by its limitations, nor by time or space. She lives a life of her own. She’s totally free. She’s what I’m supposed to be and what I’m about to become. I accept her. I embrace her & her gifts because she & I are one…
